What is Green Rider?

Green Rider is a movement of artists and productions shifting the TV & film industry towards a fairer and healthier way of working. Launched in August 2023, we have helped producers, actors and crew cut pollution by up to 80% on productions like The Capture, Wolf Hall, and Gangs of London.

Why do we need the Green Rider campaign?

The average blockbuster creates more pollution than the entire country of Dominica does in a fortnight. The scale of this problem often leaves us feeling powerless to make a difference on our own.

But we’re not alone. The overwhelming majority of people - 89% across the world - want to see ambitious action on climate change, but underestimate how much others around them are willing to act. This means we have more power than ever before to change the big things that matter - so long as we work collectively.

Film & TV have a unique opportunity here. Through our power as storytellers, we can demonstrate cleaner, community-based ways of working to our global audience and activate this silent majority.

Throughout history, art and culture have reshaped our values and sparked societal shifts - from the 1980s boycott of Apartheid, to the first gay kisses on TV, to #MeToo. We’ve done it before and we can do it again.

The Green Rider Handshake is a conversation starter for artist and production. Backed by Equity & BAFTA albert, this agreement is being used by major productions and leading actors to transform our industry. The Handshake lays out actions both parties can take to upgrade their impact, and you can amend it to your circumstances.

Don’t worry about being perfect! The aim is progress, not purity. Together, we can shift star power from consumption to collaboration.
