We know we're in a climate emergency.
Many of us feel afraid, overwhelmed and powerless to make a difference on our own.
But we’re not alone. Never before have we had so much power to change the big things that matter - especially when we work collectively.
Throughout history, art and culture have sparked societal shifts and reshaped our values - from the 1980s boycott of Apartheid, to the first gay kisses on TV, to #MeToo.
→ EastEnders’ historic first gay kiss on Bristish TV, 1989
The Green Rider is a tool that empowers artists and productions to work together to agree better practices in TV and film. The Rider states actions the artist commits to take, and what they ask of production in return.
Stories have great power.
When we work together, we can upgrade to greener and fairer ways of working, and tell stories that inspire a new sense of possibility in addressing the climate crisis.
If we act now, we can bring health back to our planet and protect it for future generations.

Change on the ground
Examples of the change that’s needed.

Travel is usually a production's biggest source of pollution, using fossil fuels to get cast, crew & equipment to location.
What you can do: Tell your agent you're up for ridesharing or using public transport and picking trains over planes in the UK & Europe. By avoiding single-use car journeys, we can hugely reduce our transport pollution.

Travel & Transport
Travel is usually a production's biggest source of pollution, using fossil fuels to get cast, crew & equipment to location.
What you can do: Tell your agent you're up for ridesharing or using public transport and picking trains over planes in the UK & Europe. By avoiding single-use car journeys, we can hugely reduce our transport pollution.
Catering
Power
One of our biggest sources of carbon pollution is powering our sets and base units - particularly heating and cooling our trailers.
What you can do: Switching off your heating or aircon on set when you're not using it have a significant impact. And telling the ADs you're doing this will let them know they don't have to worry about it.
Influence
The production of meat, particularly red meat, is significantly more polluting than other food options.
What you can do: Order plant-based or veggie, or ask the caterer for more veggie options. Every meal order on set is recorded. So not only are you reducing your production's carbon pollution, you're sending a signal that there's more demand for meat-free options.
There is a growing momentum to eliminate pollution from our productions, with many broadcasters already making strong climate commitments. Actors have a unique role to play - to communicate and use their influence for good, both within and outside of the industry.
What you can do: Ask to talk to a Sustainability lead and say you want to help however possible.
Offer to:
Join their Green Working Group if there is one
Communicate on cast Whatsapp groups what measures are being taken on set and how they can help
Do bonus content and social media promoting the production's sustainability actions.
